Social Responsibility - Rural
Development
Mr. Bushen Raina, Managing Director, mooted the
concept of 'Model Village' based on a framework of Corporate-NGO partnership for rural
development. To convert this into reality, The Tinplate Company of India Limited (TCIL)
adopted village HUDU, situated at the outskirts of Jamshedpur city.
The objective of the project is to develop this
village into a model one taking the support of the community residing therein backed by
the resources and volunteering made available by TCIL and Tata Steel Rural Development
Society (TSRDS).The roadmap was drafted with the help of (TSRDS).
The project began by defining a model village and
setting the Progress and Impact parameters for the development. A detailed ground survey
followed along with need surveys involving the community. Once the gaps were identified
and prioritized, a three year plan was drafted which was based on bridging the needs of
the community through the strengths of the partners. The plan focused on creation of
infrastructure (widening of pond for irrigation, building of toilets etc.) and constant
support to Health and Education programmes in the first phase.
Cultivation in the village depends upon the
vagaries of nature. Work of the first phase began in right earnest with the widening of
the village pond for harvesting water during monsoon. This will go a long way in providing
water to the villagers for irrigation during lean season. To support the community health
care-services, a doctor from the Tinplate Hospital visits the village once every
fortnight. TSRDS is providing support to create village-level volunteers to drive
literacy. Women involvement has been achieved through creation of self-help groups and
three groups have already been formed. These groups have undertaken projects like cat-fish
farming and chest-nut farming made possible as a result of the creation of additional
facilities by widening of the pond. The Officers of the Company supported the endeavour of
the villagers by involving themselves at various stages like providing technical
knowledge, organizing equipment for the digging work and getting involved with them.
